What are General Household Pests?
General Household Pests, otherwise known as fabric pests, are insects that feed on and damage natural fibres, synthetics, animal hair, fur, feathers, horns, hoofs, clothing, upholstery, carpeting, draperies, linens and other fabrics.
They include, but are not limited to;
- Carpet Beetles
- Clothes Moths
The group of insects known as fabric pests includes silverfish, clothes moths and carpet beetles. They are found in corners of rooms, on architraves and in cupboards or dark corners.
What do household pests feed on?
Although they prefer keratin, fabric pests will also attack other fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen and synthetics if the fabrics are contaminated with substances of nutritional value such as urine, perspiration, beer, milk or fruit juice. Except for the silverfish, the main food constituent sought after by fabric pests is a protein substance called Keratin present in fibres of animal origin such as wool. Silverfish prefer to eat substances of plant origin such as cotton cellulose and starch.
Clean processed wool cannot support the typical life cycle of clothes moth unless certain nutritional supplements are present.
Do I need a general pest control expert?
You’ll know you need assistance if you can either see the pests or their remains in your home. Perhaps you’ve tried to manage the problem yourself, but they just keep coming back. That’s when you call in the experts.
How do I get rid of general household pests or fabric pests?
Fabric or textile pest infestations sometimes present the most difficult pest control problems you can encounter. Except for fumigation, volatile, synthetic pesticide use is never an effective control for textile pest problems.
